Getting to know Gabriella is like holding up a mirror: direct, sincere and also very dedicated to her job - which she has done for many years - as well as well aware that San Gimignano is a world capital of tourism and heritage to be preserved. Who better than her can manage one of the crucial parts of the experience in Panizzi and Larniano, breakfasts? Let's find out something more about her.
#panizzipeople 16: Gabriella Ciolli
What's your job at Panizzi?
I work at the farm hotel in Larniano and I take care of the breakfasts. I also oversee the cleaning and preparation of the rooms for the guests. And it's already a lot! The farm is very large.
What is the skill that those who do your job cannot absolutely lack?
Patience, mandatory for those who deal with people, especially tourists who come to San Gimignano from all over the world to enjoy their holidays. Sometimes you get stressed but you can't show it! Experience is also key: it paves the way to an excellent experience.
What do you like the most about your work?
Rather than that, I would like to name one skill I would like to develop, namely my language skills. With this skill I could better relate to the people that come here and guide tastings too. But - to tell the truth - I can understand most people even though I don't speak their language!
What did you do before working at Panizzi?
I used to work in another farm, but my job was the same. Here the estate is much bigger and the work more varied, but fortunately, in Panizzi, I am never alone, my colleagues or external suppliers help me in my tasks when large groups are visiting. I'm never alone!
What do you do in your free time? What are your passions?
Free time is not much, especially because my work starts really early in the morning preparing breakfast and it ends after the normal checkout time which is in the late afternoon. At the end of the day, I am exhausted. In the evening, if I can, I sunbathe in my garden, I take my German Shepherd dog Asso for a walk, or I go to town to have a chat. If I am in the mood, I might even go to the shopping center in Poggibonsi, but most of the time I've already met too many people here in San Gimignano and I do not want to throw myself back into a sea of rowds. And I choose the peace of my home!
What is your favorite Panizzi wine?
I'm not a wine lover or a connoisseur. Yes, I taste flavors and aromas, but I'm not an expert. The one I personally like the best is the Passito: it is simply great with cantucci.
What is your favorite place at Panizzi?
My point of reference is between Villa Laura and the Larniano Tower, the nerve center of the village. It is my kingdom: here I organize my job, I prepare my breakfasts. But if we talk about pure beauty, a wonderful point is Villa il Caggio's swimming pool. But I can't swim anyway!
What is your favorite place in San Gimignano?
I was born in San Gimignano, San Gimignano is like my home. Every corner is part of me. For me it is not a place to visit, to see, but to live. I can not choose a specific place, it would be like wronging the rest of the city. In the summer, it is really difficult for people like me to cope with with the amount of tourists, with the fact that all the streets are crowded. And for us it is as if many strangers suddenly bursted into the walls of our house. But I also know that tourists give us work and make us survive and thrive. A place I really love? Piazza Sant'Agostino.
